Peterborough Collegiate History

Peterborough Collegiate was founded in 1827 and the orginal building was built in 1898.  Since then it has gone through many changes and renovations.  In 1907, the cornerstone was put in place.

Peterborough Collegiate consists of many regular classrooms for subjects such as English, Mathematics, and Social Sciences/Humanities. We also have computer labs, 2 gymnasiums, a Library, a cafeteria, a woodworking shop and science labs. Renovations have been made recently to accomodate some of the new programs that will be part of the "new" Peterborough Collegiate.  We are awaiting the installation of an elevator, which is scheduled to be completed sometime in the future.

As the only public High School in Peterborough from its opening until the building of Kenner Collegiate 1952, Peterborough Collegiate, and its staff and students, have had a long and very rich history of excellence in academics, athletics, community service and extra curriculuar involvement.

Peterborough Collegiate has played a significant role in the history of the city of Peterborough.  It has many proud alumni (including former Prime Minister of Canada Lester B. Pearson) who continue to support their school and wear their garnet and grey proudly.

Effective August 23rd, 2012 we became the home of Peterborough Alternative & Continuing Education (PACE at Peterborough Collegiate). We offer the following programs:  Ontario Curriculum Secondary School Credit courses (formerly offered at the Peterborough Campus of the Centre for Individual Studies - now closed), The School For Young Moms (SYM) - see the link to more information about this program on left side of the main page of our website , Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) - see the link to more information about this program on left side of the main page of our website , Correspondance Courses - see the link to more information about this program on left side of the main page of our website and the Suspension/Expulsion Program for the Peterborough area Schools.

These programs serve a wide variety of students.  This includes students under 21 years of age and Adult Education students over the age of 21.  Our mandate is to identify the gaps in our students educational profiles and then to develop and implement a program that meets their needs as they work toward the achievement of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Our downtown location, close to the city bus terminal, makes us very accessible to our students. This provides us with the opportunity to devlelop strong relationships with the Downtown Business Improvement Association (DBIA), representing local business owners in the downtown core of the city, and with the many Community Service Organizations who will be providing their services to our students.  We will continue our partnerships with business owners and community organizations (established through the former C.I.S. program) and work to broaden the range of opportunities for our students to experience Co-operative Education work placements in our community.
